Before taking the helm of the Dyersburg Dyer County Chamber of Commerce, Slater led communities through a holistic approach to economic development. He has worked in North Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Dakota with projects ranging from single-person startups to massive industrial plants.

He emphasizes real estate development as a path to economic development and has developed and managed several industrial parks, incubators and commercial buildings. He balances that perspective with a recognition of the power of aesthetics and culture to attract skilled talent.

Slater is a Certified Economic Developer and a certified Economic Development Finance Professional. He is a graduate of Mississippi State University with a BS in Electrical Engineering and of the prestigious Advanced Management Development Program in Real Estate from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In addition, he has the Urban Land Institute Certificate in Real Estate Development and is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma’s Economic Development Institute.
